An Unexpected Income From Odesk

When I resigned from work last year, a co-employee of mine followed suit. Every now and then, we keep ourselves updated with what's happening with us. She's also a mom and the "break" from work allowed her to be with her son for a longer time. Pretty long, indeed because ...two months ... three months ... four months have passed and she still couldn't find a new job. I guess, it was more of ... she couldn't find a job that would allow her to spend more time with her son.

I convinced her to try oDesk. So I gave her a link to the site and 'tutored' her on the basics of using it. I also gave her tips on how to get projects more easily. I fully understood her situation because we're both mothers who simply want to be able to take care of our sons while also earning. I was genuinely concerned about sharing with her what I am already experiencing and helping her to also earn even while she's at home with her son. I also explained to her that the link I gave her is actually my referral link, which means that when her oDesk earnings reach US$1000.00, I am going to earn a modest commission/referral fee of US$50.00.

As far as I can remember, she signed up for oDesk, either late last year (December, 2008) or early this year (January, 2009). I have forgotten all about it. I also haven't been active at oDesk because I was busy with my (professional) blogging activities. Then, I 'bumped' into her at Yahoo Messenger (YM). As usual, we updated each other and I was so happy to hear that she is now earning very well at oDesk. Then she asked me if I have received my referral fee and I replied with ... Oh My Gosh! Then I checked my oDesk account and yeah, it was there since May, 2009! LOL. And it's now October.

Cheers to oDesk. I knew it is helping a lot of Filipinos. I'm really glad I recommended it to my friend who is now benefiting a lot from it. Not only that, I also earned from simply referring it. Thank you, oDesk.

I Am Now Earning Like A Regular Employee Through Blogging

I am a Filipino mom and I now earn a steady income which is higher than what an average Filipino regular employee earns, just staying at home and working only for around 2 to 4 hours daily. This has been my goal. I resigned from my 9.5-hour job (inclusive of lunch and 2 short breaks) last September, 2008 because I wanted to be able to take care of my son. I felt that my regular job was just using up a lot of my precious time that I should have been sharing with my son. Aside from the hours that I had to spend at the office, there was still the travel time, dress-up time and additional meetings that I had to deal with, not mentioning the stress, tiredness and pressure that go along with having a regular job. When I was working at the office, my husband was the one who stayed at home to take care of our son. Now he is able to work while I stay at home and I am still able to earn.

So how did I do it?
You see, there are thousands, maybe even millions, of options being offered on the internet by which one can earn. I have tried some of them - writing paid articles, paid-to-click (PTC), writing paid reviews, freelance work (oDesk), earn by joining conversations (dneero). (Read one of my previous posts, "... And The Search For Ways To Earn Online Continues"). But the one thing that I really focused on was blogging and Google Adsense. My number 1 policy in joining a program or selecting an option is that I shouldn't spend a single cent when signing-up.

Disadvantages of options other than blogging and google adsense.
I have earned some money with these above-mentioned options, but none of them is enough or even all of them combined are not enough to help support my family. Why? Because opportunities for paid reviews/articles and conversations only come in trickles and usually favor US or Canadian-based writers.

With PTC, the earnings per click are much too small and would take a very long time to accumulate to be able to reach a set minimum payout. (Read my write-up on PTC programs.)

With oDesk, one can experience the following disadvantages:

You have to apply for each and every project that you are interested in just like you are applying for a regular job, complete with making an application letter, submitting a resume, undergoing exams and interviews.
You are competing with thousands of other applicants all over the world just for one project, and bid for it.
You have a boss who you probably won't ever meet in person and who can be demanding or difficult just like any boss in a regular employment setting.
There is the risk of not getting paid if it is a fixed-rate job.
Even if you are working from home, you still don't own your time because most of the time, the employer dictates the hours of work.

Of course, there are also advantages, especially for those who are single or those who have househelp and many Filipinos have been earning quite well with oDesk. But for me, whose priority is my son, the oDesk set-up simply doesn't work too well.

So what works for me then?
What really makes me (shall I say) a "successful" Filipino internet earner is blogging combined with the Google Adsense program. I guess, a big part of why I am successful is because I enjoy it so much. My creativity is being maximized to the fullest and I am definitely my own boss, although Google is my employer. I can work whenever I want to (actually spelled out as "work whenever my son is sleeping" hehe). I am using the services of blogger.com as my blogging host which means I am getting it for free. As for the Adsense program, I'd say it is the best since it doesn't discriminate any particular geographical location, it gives equal opportunities to all bloggers, and best of all, it pays on time :)

My blogging strategy.
While others concentrate on one blog - they discuss as many interesting or controversial but diverse topics as they can and post them all on this one same blog; they do extensive link building and SEO techniques to gain higher pagerank and search engine ranking, again for this 1 blog - I chose to create multiple blogs with a different focused topic for each blog. I am no expert when it comes to SEO, etc. but I am doing it this way because, I sort of think that it is easier and not confusing for the search engines to rank your site if it is focused on only 1 topic. Anyways, so far, most of my blogs are doing good in terms of search engine rankings. This should be the number 1 aim of any web publisher, because higher search engine ranking means more traffic and more traffic means more earnings.

It is also important to find your niche or topic. You have to make sure that you enjoy discussing that topic and you will be able to write about it for the longest time possible. Aside from that, you also need to know your audience and what they will be interested about.

My next goal.
Of course, more earnings ... and it is possible. Ever since I resigned and focused on internet work, the earnings have been consistently increasing. I believe that doubling it, tripling it and even more is very possible.

And a lot more.
There are a lot of other things that I want to share about my experiences in blogging, Adsense and my mission of earning through the internet. There are also a lot of other things that I still need to learn. As usual, it is my desire to write about these things whenever I have the luxury of time to do so. Create a ritual and stick to it.
Clearly determine when you are beginning work and try to forget that you are actually in the comforts of your own home.

Come up with a plan.
To make the most out of your time at home, carefully plan out what should be done for the entire day. By doing so, you can guarantee that everything is well taken care of. Also, take breaks especially when you need to do a lot of repetitive tasks but never overindulge.

Establish a schedule for your other duties.
Do not forget your other responsibilities at home, too. Don't just put work tasks in your schedule. Spare a fraction of your time for your family, for meals, for relaxation, for doing the laundry and dishes, and for all the other things you wish to get done by working from home.

Make things easier.
Do not let your work get piled up by focusing on tasks that really matter and must be immediately completed. Get rid of distractions that take much of your time.

Choose a quiet work location.
If possible, have a separate room, away from the living room or family room. Aside from being noise-free, your working area should also be spacious enough for you to be at ease and in the mood for work.

Keep yourself well-groomed.
As comfortable as it may seem, there is no better way to get hyped up at work and start your day right than taking a shower first and putting on some decent clothing.

Stay in touch.
Make sure that your lines of communication with your clients and team members are still open even if you are working at home. Keep them updated with the progress of your work so as not to be accused of negligence.

Use a timer to stay focused.
If it can help you to concentrate better, use a timer. If you have problems staying focused, and tent to surf the web or check email or whatever, try disconnecting when you really need to concentrate on a task. Ask everyone else at home to not bother you when you're into an important task.

Set limits for every task
If you have a lineup of tasks waiting to be done, set a time limit for each one of them so you still not end up getting stuck to one task the whole day.

I search on and on ... and always run out of time to write here. So what has been my progress so far?

I picked up my first Adsense payment last month, September 29 through Western Union. I won't be getting my second payment this month because my earnings for September didn't reach $100.00, but I'm hoping it would before the end of October to be able to collect by November. The ff. is an excerpt from the Adsense Payment Guide:
... When your total unpaid earnings reach $100, we'll send you a payment at the end of the next month. For example, if your total unpaid earnings reached $100 during January and you completed the 4 steps above, we would send you a payment at the end of February.

If your total unpaid earnings haven't yet reached $100, they'll roll over to the next month and accrue until they meet the $100 threshold.

Payment is disbursed within approximately 30 days of the end of the month ...

I wrote a review for SponsoredReviews.com for $6.50 and it is now in my Paypal account. I was excited when I got this review offer and I thought more would easily come. I submitted bids for other advertisers at SponsoredReviews but so far none has been approved and are still pending. Well, I really hope I can get more approvals and write more reviews for SponsoredReviews because they are one of the few who pays regularly (bi-weekly) with no minimum payout

I tried ReviewStream.com and wrote a review for one of the items listed there. You see, their style is quite different because at ReviewStream you don't need to have an account. You just go to their site then choose from a list of items for review then go ahead and write a review for that item. Submit it using your email account then wait for approval. It's actually easier because you don't need to bid to be able to write a review. The downside is the rate is much lower. Their current review rate is $2.00. However, there is an option to be paid only by the bulk rate, which is the rate divided by 5, in this case, $0.40. This is how ReviewStream explains the bulk rate:
- If your review meets all of our criteria you'll be paid the regular rate;
- If your review doesn't meet some of our criteria, and the bulk rate box was checked, you will be paid at the bulk rate;
- If your review doesn't meet some of our criteria, and the bulk rate box wasn't checked, the review will be rejected (you can resubmit it with the bulk rate box checked);
- If your review doesn't meet all of our criteria, your review will be rejected whether the bulk rate box was checked or not.
So, to be sure, you'll just check the bulk rate box, right? There's also a minimum payout, which is $50.00. So you'll need to write 125 articles (at the bulk rate) to be able to collect payment. Wow.

So far what's really promising is Adsense. I have 5 blogs that are currently active:

Trabaho Ba Kamo is the top earner, since it's really the one where I have focused on since the start. I promote it regularly on forums, do link building for it, and really spend time to research for my topics and posts. Others are starting to pick up and hopefully, will help with my Adsense earnings soon as well.

There are really a lot of ways to earn online, but all of them needs hard work (at least at the start). Time is also very essential. I would always say, if only I have a lot of time on my hands, then I would have earned more. But then again, I have chosen to work at home so I can take care of my son, so I would have to make the best of what I have or occasionally, exchange precious sleep with work. (Like right now, I would need to end this article because he has woken up :) )

I Got A Review Assignment From LinkWorth

A LinkPost is a paid blog post written by a blogger within the LinkWorth community. It is under this category that the review job was offered to me. Since I had been inactive at LinkWorth for quite a while, having lost my Google Page Rank (for Trabaho Ba Kamo), I no longer check my LinkWorth account, hence, I was not aware that there has been an offer. It was just a good thing that I regularly check my emails wherein LinkWorth sent me a notice.

I checked out the website for which I was supposed to do a review. I immediately approved the offer and composed the blog post for not more than an hour. I posted it and updated the status on LinkWorth. After just a few days, probably 3, I got another email saying the review was approved. I checked my account and was pleased to see that it was worth 14.00. Not bad for a less-than-an-hour job!

However I still need to wait till the minimum payout. I chose Paypal as my form of payment because it has the lowest minimum payout, which is $25.00. Otherwise, it would have to be $100.00. I hope LinkWorth gives me some more review jobs. :)

I have signed up for oDesk but it seems it would take quite some time before you can get your first job here. Their process is pretty complicated. After you have filled out the sign-up form and updated your profile, you would need to pass the oDesk readiness exam. This is a requirement before you can apply for any project. Although it is an open-book, multiple-choice type of exam, it still requires your 100% undivided attention as some questions are tricky. Aside from the exam, you would need to download the 'oDesk Team' software, which will track down the hours you spend on a project. It also monitors everything you do during your work hours and even has a screen shot of your actual work. Some people do not like this, because they think it is like intruding into privacy. However, others think it is alright since only 'official' runtime is actually being monitored. Also, since some projects are paid by the hour, a good monitoring system is really necessary. Prior to winning a project, a Provider/Applicant also needs to undergo an interview which may be set up via internet chat or telephone call, depending on the Employer. So, it's pretty much just like applying for an actual job. The good thing with oDesk is the projects look really good.

The other outsourcing sites look less complicated. Other veteran freelancers prefer Rentacoder because it is easier and does not require an interview. The best way to find out which one is better is to sign up and try them out. These sites look very promising, and I could see fellow Filipino freelancers bidding on some projects.

Page Rank Matters!

If you have a Google ToolBar installed on your browser, you can easily see the corresponding PageRank of any website you are currently browsing. The PageRank tells you how Google assesses the importance of the page you are viewing.

Every Blogger, or Web Publisher, in general, knows how important a Page Rank is, because the higher the Page Rank, the higher is the site's credibility, both to surfers (who create traffic) and to advertisers, hence, more earnings. A higher Page Rank also puts your site on the front pages of major Search Engines, particularly Google.

Trabaho.Ba.Kamo is a pet project of mine. I am so passionate about making it succeed and making my readers succeed by following the tips I post there. I was so glad when it started picking up and noticed it getting a PageRank of 3. However, when I started experimenting on the different Pay-Per-Click (PPC) programs, which are actually competitors of Google's Adsense, I felt like being hit by lightning when my PageRank dropped to zero! I tried to test the site's 'searchability' by going to Google Search and typing the keyword 'trabaho'. This time I felt like being poured with icy cold water when it didn't show up until the very last page, when it used to appear on the first page using the same keyword.

I panicked, got discouraged but later on felt challenged. I had to find out what happened. Initially, I didn't know what exactly caused the change. But after investigating and checking my stats, it seemed the change began when I started using Bidvertiser and LinkWorth. I researched and soon found out, mostly from forums and other blogs that other sites were also penalized because of using similar programs. No. 4 of an article entitled 15 Common Mistakes That Violate Google Adsense TOS from Quick Online Tips says "... Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google Adsense competition in their field." Furthermore, Google Adsense Program Policies clearly state that "... In order to prevent user confusion, we do not permit Google ads or search boxes to be published on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colors as the Google ads or search boxes on that site. Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure these ads cannot be confused with Google ads." However, the date this was last updated indicates August, 2008. I am not sure if that clause was already included prior to the update, which means I was guilty of 'policy ignorance' or not thoroughly reviewing Adsense policies. Anyway, I did the ff. to try to regain my Page Rank:

I added my site to Google's Webmaster Tools.
I followed the steps indicated there such as:
1. Verify the site.
2. Add a sitemap.
I requested for a reconsideration (A link for this purpose could be seen on the right column under 'Tools'), stating there
- my reason for the request
- a brief account of what happened
- what policy I think, was violated that caused the site to be penalized
- an explanation (saying it was an honest mistake and an ignorance on my part
- an apology and a 'promise' to be more aware and careful next time

After that, I saw the site slowly moving up the pages of Google search, although still not on the first few pages, but at least it was there. Recently, the Page Rank has gone up from 0 to 2.

Though I am still looking for other ways to earn online, I am now very careful so as not to create a conflict with Google and violate Adsense policies. The best way to do before signing up with another program would be to research first and surf through forums whether or not it might affect your Page Rank. Other webmasters might feel that it doesn't really matter, but when you see your traffic and Adsense earnings dwindling, then maybe it's time to clean up (other ad links) and think again.

Paid-To-Click (PTC) Programs

As the name implies, to get paid, you simply have to do one thing, and that is to click! What, you may ask, are you supposed to click? These are hyperlinks that would direct you to websites, which are actually paid advertisements. Usually, the rate is $.01 (1 cent) per click. For that click to be credited to your account, you have to view the advertisement for a certain time period, usually at least 30 seconds (or actually, you just have to keep the window open for at least 30 seconds), after which, you can close it and you have earned the $.01. The logic behind the "30 second" required viewing time is that you are actually the target audience of the ads. It is assumed that after 30 seconds, you have understood the message, hence there is a big possibility that an action from you will follow. For example, if the ad is offering membership to a new program, it is very likely that you will sign up for membership.
Easy money, but then, the number of available advertisements for viewing is very limited if you did not sign up for premium membership. For standard members, you can only view mostly up to 12 advertisements per day (24 hours). For some it could even be as low as 2 advertisements per day. For premium members however, most PTC sites could boast of over 500 advertisements available for viewing. BUT, to sign up and upgrade to premium status, there is a corresponding fee, usually $10.00.

Another way to earn from these PTC sites, aside from clicking the ads, would be through their referral programs. Like the pay-per-click programs, they offer referral commissions for leading a person to sign up for membership.

How To Make Money With Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs can either be a way to put a little extra cash in your pocket or, hopefully, become a full time job. However, it's not like you can put up a bunch of affiliate links and expect to start making a mint.
